Chucao: Oral Reading Fluency Assessment for Schools
A tablet app and teacher dashboard where children read aloud with Chu, a friendly Chilean bird, while on-device AI measures fluency.
01. The Challenge
Measuring reading fluency takes a teacher with a printed text and a stopwatch, one child at a time. It is slow, depends on who assesses, and reading in front of a timing adult makes children anxious.
02. The Solution
Two products for two users. On the tablet, whisper.rn transcribes speech on the device, works offline and syncs later, and Chu keeps the experience warm with no visible timer and no error sounds. On the web, teachers review every word (correct, omitted, substituted, inserted), listen to the audio at different speeds and export PDF reports. Privacy is built in: parental consent comes first, audio stays on the tablet unless consent is given, and data is minimal.
03. The Result
A working dual platform designed for classrooms with unreliable connectivity, where assessment feels like a story time for the child and gives the teacher a detailed, reviewable record.
